The playing field is divided into several tracks. Zombies usually walk towards the house along only one of the paths (there is only one exception - when they smell garlic, they can change their path). In the lower levels of the game, if zombies reach a house, only one tool can be used to defend against them, but that tool will not appear again until the next level. At later levels, the player has the opportunity to buy various obstacle upgrades for his yard, creating additional difficulties for the enemy.

Plants in the game are divided into several types, each of which is designed to fight a specific type of zombie. Some plantings also “live” only at certain times of the day; for example, mushrooms are able to repel raiders only at night. Each crop requires a certain amount of sunlight - the main resource in the game. Depending on the power of the plant, the amount of sunlight for its construction also depends.
